KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas State looked ready to play an extra five minutes against Texas in Austin on Tuesday night, but Jonathan Holmes had different plans. Following a Shane Southwell shot that tied the game 64 with seven seconds to go, Texas advanced the ball to the front court and called timeout.
After not getting the look they wanted and calling another timeout, the ball found its way to Holmes’ hands in the corner. He launched a three-pointer that fell in direct unison with the tenths of seconds disappearing off the clock. The shot was good and no time remained for a desperation shot for the Wildcats, the Longhorns won by the final score of 67-64.
Thomas Gipson led the Wildcats with 24 points and also contributed five rebounds, Southwell also poured in 13 points. KSU continues its travels on Saturday when the team heads to Ames for an afternoon meeting with the Iowa State Cyclones, tipoff is at 12:45 p.m. local time.
LSU block party too much for Mizzou to handle in Baton Rouge
Despite getting big nights from the usual trio of Jabari Brown, Jordan Clarkson and Earnest Ross, the eight points contributed by the rest of the Tigers wasn’t enough to pick up a road win against LSU. The battle of the Tigers went to the team in purple and gold by the score of 77-71.
Mizzou was often able to work the ball down low, but Jordan Mickey swatted five shot attempts away, and Mizzou had four other shots blocked throughout the game. Brown was sizzling from the field en route to scoring 28 points on 10-15 shooting that included 5-6 from three-point range. Ross had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds while Clarkson scored 19 points and nabbed four steals.
But Mizzou’s post players Johnathan Williams III, Ryan Rosburg, Tony Criswell and Torren Jones combined for only eight points and shot 4-17 from the field in 75 combined minutes. The Tigers will head home to play South Carolina on Saturday, that game starts at 3 p.m. local time.
