COLUMBIA, Mo. — Mike Alden announced on Thursday that he is stepping down as athletic director at the University of Missouri, a post he’s held since 1998. Alden stated in a letter that his last day will be August 31, 2015, and he plans to take a position as an instructor in the university’s College of Education.
“We are proud of what we have accomplished over the past 17 years, which is a lifetime for an athletics administrator. I am most proud of our tremendous coaches, staff and student-athletes and how they represent our university with academic integrity, social responsibility and competitive excellence,” Alden wrote.
Alden oversaw the university’s move from the Big 12 Conference to the Southeastern Conference in July of 2012. He also serves as the president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. His tenure in the department is only exceeded by Don Faurot, who held the position for 27 years between 1946-1966.
