KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas Jayhawks advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament after defeating the Detroit Titans 65-50 on Friday night in Omaha, Neb.
A reverse jam by Detroit junior forward Doug Anderson put the Titans up 21-19 with 9:04 to play in the 1st half. KU answered with a 15-3 run to end the half, and led by 10 at the break.
The second-seeded Jayhawks (28-6, 16-2 Big 12) kicked off the 2nd half with a 19-4 run, and led 53-28 with 12:57 remaining. Kansas dominated the 2nd half, and rolled to an easy victory.
KU played superb defense, holding No. 15 seed Detroit (22-14, 11-7 Horizon) to 31.7% shooting from the field, and 17.6% from three-point range.
Doug Anderson led the Titans with 15 points. Senior center Eli Holman added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Kansas was led by junior forward Thomas Robinson, who recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Junior guard Elijah Johnson added 15 points, and junior center Jeff Withey finished with 7 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 blocks.
The Jayhawks will face the No. 10 seed Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday in Omaha. The winner of that game will advance to the Sweet Sixteen in St. Louis, Mo. next weekend.
