Bad start, then an even worse finish. The Kansas Jayhawks had their 10-game win streak snapped on Saturday afternoon, losing 72-64 to the Iowa State Cyclones at a sold out Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.
Led by sophomore forward Royce White who had 18 points and 9 rebounds, the Cyclones handed the Jayhawks their first loss in Big 12 play this season. Iowa State (15-6,5-3), who had lost 13 straight to Kansas, also got 15 points from Melvin Ejim. Iowa State hadn’t beaten Kansas (17-4, 7-1) since 2005.
Tyshawn Taylor led all Kansas scorers with 16 points. Thomas Robinson had 13 points and 7 rebounds, but he also had 5 turnovers. Iowa State outrebounded Kansas 34-19. Kansas had as much as a 6-point lead early in the second half, but Iowa State continually isolate White in the low post to get excellent shot selection, and shot 34 free throws to just 16 for Kansas.
All five Kansas starters scored in double figures, but the Jayhawks only got 5 points off their bench. The win by Iowa State avenges an earlier loss to KU two weeks ago at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence.
