MANHATTAN, Kan.- Kansas State’s athletic, academic, administrative, and fundraising success this year have helped give Athletic Director John Currie some well deserved recognition.
This week’s edition of SportsBusiness Journal announced that Currie has received the FBS Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year Award. This outstanding honor is only given to four FBS Athletic Directors across the country.
“This is a special honor, and I am so proud of John and his team for bringing pride to all members of the Wildcat family,” K-State President Kirk Schulz said.
Currie became Athletic Director in 2009, ever since then K-State has gained lots of national attention for its turnaround in athletics as well as academics. Just this past year K-State’s football, men’s basketball and baseball teams won conference championships. Only four other BCS teams have accomplished this great achievement since 1998.
The Wildcat academic year in 2012-13 also ended with noteworthy success. A total of 73 current or former student-athletes earned degrees, while this spring 236 earned Big 12 Commissioner’s honor roll accolades.
“Thanks to our terrific fans, the best collective group of head coaches in the country, over 450 dedicated student-athletes and a determined and hard-working staff, we have made tremendous progress towards our vision of a model intercollegiate athletics program. It is humbling to receive an award such as this, and I am pleased to accept this honor on behalf of our team, fans and university community” Currie said.
Currie will accept the award during the NACDA’s annual convention in Orlando, Fla.
