OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The Kansas City area has a 2012 Olympic gold medalist in swimmer Shannon Vreeland of Overland Park, Kan. Vreeland is a 2010 graduate of Blue Valley West High School. She currently swims at the University of Georgia.
Vreeland was part of the women’s 4×200 freestyle relay that won gold on Wednesday in London. She swam with Allison Schmitt, Missy Franklin and Dana Vollmer. The U.S. team won in a time of 7:42:92, chasing down Australia to win the gold. Australia won silver. France took bronze.
Vreeland is the daughter of Dan and Connie Vreeland of Overland Park.
