NEW YORK — For the 10th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies, and the rest of the college football world, no player has been more valuable than freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel.
The 20-year-old Manziel became the first freshman to ever win the Heisman Trophy, and it wasn’t even close. Notre Dame senior linebacker Manti Te’o came in second, while Kansas State senior quarterback Collin Klein finished a distant third.
Manziel had 474 first-place votes. Te’o finished with 321 first-place votes, while Klein tallied just 60 first-place votes.
Manziel, otherwise known as Johnny Football, put up eye-popping stats this season, throwing for 3,419 yards, 24 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He also ran for 1,181 yards and 19 TD’s. After receiving college football’s most prestigious award on Saturday night, Johnny Football became Johnny Heisman.
Klein also put up impressive numbers this season, throwing for 2,490 yards, 15 TD’s, and seven INT’s. Klein also rushed for 890 yards and 22 TD’s.
Te’o led the Fighting Irish defense with 103 tackles and seven interceptions.
