MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — After scoring on each of their first five possessions in the first half, it was clear the 4th-ranked Kansas State Wildcats weren’t going to be stopped.
After a 55-14 thrashing of the West Virginia Mountaineers at Mountaineer Field on Saturday night, the Wildcats’ national title hopes remain intact.
The Mountaineers’ only first half score came on a 100-yard kickoff return by sophomore wide receiver Tavon Austin that narrowed the gap to 24-7.
K-State (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) answered with a 78-yard touchdown drive, and took a 31-7 lead into halftime. In the first half alone, the Cats outgained the Mountaineers (5-2, 2-2 Big 12) 346-74.
Wildcats senior quarterback Collin Klein turned in another monster performance. Klein completed 19 of 21 passes for 323 yards and three TD’s. Klein also had 12 carries for 41 yards and four rushing TD’s.
K-State sophomore WR Tyler Lockett had nine catches for 194 yards and two TD’s. The Cats scored seven straight TD’s.
Mountaineers superstar senior QB Geno Smith went 21-32 for 143 yards with one TD and two interceptions, his first two picks of the season. Smith also had seven carries for a loss of 15 yards.
K-State hosts the No. 18 Texas Tech Red Raiders next Saturday afternoon at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
