LAWRENCE, Kan. — Leaving little room for doubt, the ninth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks dominated the Colorado Buffaloes 90-54 on Saturday afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse.
Colorado never led in this contest, as Kansas jumped out to an 18-3 lead. The Buffaloes answered with a 15-11 run, and trailed 29-18 with 7:15 left in the first half. That’s as close as they would get for the rest of the afternoon.
The Buffaloes (7-2, 0-2 away) outrebounded the Jayhawks 17-15 in the first half, but committed 12 turnovers, while Kansas had two. KU was cold from three-point range early on, going 2-12 in the first half.
Jayhawks redshirt freshman Ben McLemore delivered another outstanding performance, racking up 17 points by halftime. McLemore finished the game with 24 points, and went 10-11 from the free throw line. KU led 43-22 at the break.
The Jayhawks (7-1, 4-0 home) opened up the second half with a 9-0 run and never looked back. KU shot 40% from 3-point range, and 54.8% from the field. The Hawks played stellar defense all afternoon, limiting the Buffs to 15.4% shooting from 3-point range, and 37% from the field. KU outrebounded CU 37-28.
KU senior forward Kevin Young finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. Senior center Jeff Withey had eight points, seven rebounds, and five blocks. Senior guard Travis Releford chipped in 10 points and six assists.
The Jayhawks take on Belmont next Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse.
