KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Royals beat Tampa Bay Wednesday night 9-to-7, but they lost one of their most valuable players in the process. Alex Gordon went down with a scary injury while trying to make a great catch.
It was the top of the fourth and Tampa Bay’s Logan Forsythe hits a drive to left field, Gordon gives chase and just misses it. As he reaches for the ball, Gordon comes down awkwardly. He then falls to the ground.
A few minutes later, the trainers carted Gordon off as he sat with a towel over his head.
After the game manager Ned Yost said it appears to be a groin strain, but the severity and how long Gordon would be out had not yet been determined.
Unfortunately, groin strains take a long time to heal. If Gordon’s injury is severe, it could take around two to three months to heal.
Jarrod Dyson and Paulo Orlando will take over duties in left field and you can expect the Royals to call up a minor leaguer to back them up until Gordon returns. Right now, it also looks like he will miss playing in the All-Star game.
Fans expressed their sadness on Twitter right after they saw Gordon fall down.
I think my family thinks I'm crazy. I'm walking around the house like my best friend died. They don't understand. #AlexGordon #royals

I'm not a doctor (nor do I play one on TV) but he went down like it was a Grade 3 groin strainhttps://t.co/Ko269785lT #royals #alexgordon
