KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals were supposed to be wrapping up a ten-game home stand on Sunday. But because Mother Nature had to have her say over the last week, the Royals who were hosting the Chicago White Sox, were only at game number eight.
Sunday was not only Cinco De Mayo, but also “Dress to the Nines Day” at Kaufman Stadium with a lot of fans sporting the 1940’s look.
This was a game you didn’t mind getting dressed up for. The Royals were down 1 – 0 in the 5th inning. Then they scored three times. Jeff Keppinger helped by booting a hard shot from Alex Gordon.
The Sox came back and scored four times in the 7th. One on a two-run double from leadoff man Alejandro de Aza off of Royals reliever Tim Collins. Collins faced three batters and they all scored.
The Royals were down to their last out in the bottom of the 9th and were trailing by two runs when Billy Butler delivered a shot to the gap in right center. This hit scored two runs, keeping the Royals alive, and tied the game at 5 – 5.
Then in the 10th, the Royals won it. Two outs for Alex Gordon, who brought in the game winning hit with another shot to the gap in right center.
The final score was 6 – 5. Gordon and Butler had two RBI’s apiece. Greg Holland got the win and the Royals keep pace with the Detroit Tigers who won again down in Houston.
The Royals have 17 wins this season. Eleven of those wins have been the come from behind kind. Some how, some way, this team just doesn’t give up.
