KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Royals obtained infielder Emilio Bonifacio from the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday in exchange for cash or a player to be named later. Infielder Miguel Tejada was placed on the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man roster.
A corresponding move to clear a spot on the 25-man active roster is pending. The switch-hitting Bonifacio batted .218 with three homers and 20 RBIs in 94 games for the Blue Jays. He’s previously played with Arizona, Washington and Miami. His best year was 2011, when he hit .296 for the Marlins.
Placing Tejada on the 60-day disabled list means he is basically done for the season, unless the Royals happen to make the playoffs and play on into October. Outfielder Lorenzo Cain is on the 15-day disabled list, and third baseman Mike Moustakas has missed the last two games against Miami with a strained left calf. Bonifacio should join the Royals for their five-games in four-days series with the Tigers in Detroit starting on Thursday.
