KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs laid another preseason egg on Friday night, losing 44-14 to the Seattle Seahawks at Arrowhead Stadium.
Seattle came out of the gates on fire, scoring on all five of their first half possessions. Rookie quarterback Russell Wilson threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kellen Winslow to give the Seahawks a 16-0 lead in the second quarter.
Kansas City and QB Matt Cassel answered with an 85-yard drive to cut the deficit to 16-7. The drive ended with a 9-yard TD pass to wide receiver Dexter McCluster. That’s where the party would end for the Chiefs. Another TD pass by Wilson gave the Seahawks a 23-7 lead before halftime.
Seattle opened up the second half with a 55-yard drive to make it 30-7, highlighted by running back Robert Turbin’s 25-yard TD run.
Cassel got sacked and lost a fumble on the ensuing drive, and later threw a pick-six to safety Earl Thomas, who returned the interception 75 yards for a TD. To add insult to injury, WR Golden Tate returned a punt 92 yards for a TD to give the Seahawks a 44-7 lead in the third quarter.
Chiefs backup QB Brady Quinn led a 90-yard drive that resulted in a TD run by RB Nate Eachus in the fourth quarter, but the damage was clearly already done.
Seattle is 3-0 in the preseason. The Chiefs are now 1-2, with many questions looming after another lackluster performance. Their final preseason game will be next Thursday at Lambeau Field against the Green Bay Packers.
