KANSAS CITY, Mo. — To the surprise of no one, the Royals have exercised the $13.5 million dollar option on pitcher James Shields. This means Shields will return to lead the Royals’ starting rotation for a second season. Shields’ contributions weren’t limited to his 13-9 record or 3.15 ERA. He was the key figure in creating a new attitude and culture in the clubhouse that culminated in the club’s first winning season in 10 years.
Shields was also named the winner of the club’s 2013 Joe Burke Special Achievement Award for his leadership and impact on the 2013 Royals.
