KANSAS CITY, MO. — Winter weather and soccer go together like macaroni and jelly. But with the MLS Cup in Kansas City on Saturday, and Sporting KC playing for the championship, no one is complaining.

Thousands of fans packed Power and Light on Friday night, braving the frigid temperatures for the MLS Cup Last Night Out. Conditions weren’t so bad, there were heaters and places to duck inside.

Saturday is when theses fans are going to show their true dedication. Saturday’s MLS Cup between Sporting KC and Real Salt Lake kicks off at 3 p.m. and the high will only reach 22 degrees. Factor in the wind chill and it’s going to be bone chilling cold.

At Sporting Park, Providence Medical Center has two first aid stations set up and ready to treat anyone who needs medical attention. So if you’re going to the game — or just going out — here’s what you need to know

Hypothermia can happen anytime

The best way to prevent it — wear layers — keep moving and take off any attire that gets wet.

Stay away from alcohol

This sounds obvious — but Christian Tanner — the ER Director for Providence says events like tomorrows big game can be dangerous.

“That presents a whole unique experience because you get people who are out in the crowd, who are not dressed appropriately and you get kind of some rowdy bunch out there. Maybe (they are) showing off with no shirt, which is silly, and then you have alcohol on top of it.”

At Sporting’s last home game — the temperature was similar to what we are going to see on Saturday. Tanner said they treated 32 patients — that’s more than quadruple what they normal see during a game

Most of those for cold weather related issues.
