LAWRENCE, Kan. — The number one high school basketball player in the country verbally committed to play for the Kansas Jayhawks and head coach Bill Self on Tuesday.
Andrew Wiggins, a 6′ 7″ forward from Huntington Prep school in West Virginia, chose Kansas over Florida State, Kentucky and North Carolina. Recruiting experts had placed KU’s overall recruiting class second in the nation behind Kentucky.
Speculation about where Wiggins would play had gone on for months. But in the end, he signed with Kansas in a small ceremony in front of his family and friends at his high school.
“He’s a tremendous talent. A terrific kid, probably a better kid than he is a talent,” said Coach Self on Tuesday afternoon. “He brings athleticism, length, scoring ability and he’s also an assassin, an alpha dog. We definitely need that when you have a bunch of young kids.”
If he were eligible for the NBA draft, Wiggins would be projected as the number one overall pick. He made the USA Today All-American team and was also named as the player of the year.
“I know the people that support our program are going to be even more pleasantly surprised when they seem him run,” Self said.
