SAN FRANCISCO — Pitching took center stage in game two of the World Series at AT&T Park on Thursday night, as the Detroit Tigers squeaked out a 2-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
The Giants now lead the World Series 2-0.
After Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval’s epic three home run performance in game one, the World Series was due for a pitchers’ duel. It was a scoreless game until the Giants got to Detroit’s bullpen in the bottom of the seventh.
Tigers starter Doug Fister shook off a nasty line drive that ricocheted off his head in the second inning, and went on to pitch brilliantly. Fister gave up one run on four hits in six scoreless innings, striking out three and walking one.
Giants starter Madison Bumgarner took it one step further. Bumgarner tossed 7 scoreless innings and allowed only two hits, fanning eight and walking two.
The bases were loaded with no outs in the seventh, when Brandon Crawford’s RBI gave the Giants a 1-0 lead. The damage could’ve been much worse. Crawford hit into a double play, and reliever Drew Smyly struck out pinch-hitter Ryan Theriot to end the inning.
A sacrifice fly by right fielder Hunter Pence gave the Giants a 2-0 lead in the eighth. Giants closer Sergio Romo earned the save.
The World Series heads to Comerica Park in Detroit for game three on Saturday night.
