KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The freezing temperatures aren’t keeping people off area running trails. Groups of runners hit Loose Park on Sunday, to brace the cold temperatures and get some exercise.

Jeff Waters, who ran seven miles, said running in the cold is addicting. He said he has been doing it since the 1970s and isn’t stopping anytime soon.

“I’m trying to make up for the holiday,” he said. “Just trying to get out and get a little exercise and get away from being cooped up.”

Waters shared some of his best cold-weather running tips with FOX 4. His best kept secret?  He puts Vaseline on his face before he hits the trail.

“There are tricks, lots of layers,” Waters said. “Vaseline to cut the wind chill; stuff like that.”

Waters said a runner’s best bet to staying warm is dressing in layers. He wore three layers of clothes on Sunday’s bitter run.

“Extra gloves, extra stuff on the head, neck, everything,” he said. “Cover everything you can, except the mouth, you have to be able to breathe.
